After thinking about how the Dawn of Spring tastes like chicken (see post from Monday 3/29), today I noticed the first Scent of Spring - GRASS.
Mmmm, grass!
It started growing again a few days ago and now all the lawns are dark green with the lush & fluffy first growth of Spring, and the smell is sweet and subtle, not overpowering like after someone mows. It's been raining every day, so no one has cut their lawn yet, it's just growing unimpeded and bringing some color back to this long-grey neighborhood.
Today I had a moment of clarity, like the marijuana-inspired sudden awareness of beauty and richness of color I used to enjoy when outdoors and high. I was standing on my porch, looking at our dog, both of us squinting while facing the sunset, and the stretched-out shadow of her wagging tail sweeping back and forth across the length of the porch filled me with that old overwhelming sense of heightened awareness of the beauty of life that nourishes and surrounds me.
I used to need weed to get that feeling. Today it just happened unsolicited.
