To Molly:
If i may make a recommendation or two:
Living In Clip is a 2 disc live cd, very good and more towards the folksy end of her spectrum. This one is just her with a guitar, the drummer and the bassist. This is the album that attracted me to her in the first place.
So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter is also a 2 disc cd, mostly live and has a a lot of brass instruments playing with the normal band. It also has some duets with a woman I am unfamiliar with. This was her 1st post-Sept. 11 album, and was her most political album to date. Very anti-war, anti-Bush, anti-gun control. ("It don't take a weatherman to look around and see the weather, Jeb said he'd deliver Florida folks and boy did he ever...")
Evolve is a single disc cd, her latest release. This one also has some brass in the background, but not as heavy. All of these 3 albums are very good and worth buying, but Evolve has 2 of my favorite songs she's ever written on it: "Evolve", and "Serpentine". This album is also very political on a few songs, and anti-capitalist: ("'cause the profit system follows the path of least resistance and the path of least resistance is what makes the river crooked...")
If I had to pick, I'd say Living in Clip and Evolve are my favorite of all her albums, although there are still a couple I haven't heard.
She also has a brand new album out later this month called Educated Guess.
Sorry to sound like I'm writing a review, but I love music as much as I love books.
I read up on the story of Callisto. Turns out Gallileo named the moon after the nymph. Why are the tales in ancient mythology so fucking brutal? I mean, what is wrong with us as a species when the people in our myths are conniving rapists (which apparently Zeus was on multiple occasions) and our figures of purity and hope are blamed for being victims and then betrayed and abandoned by those they most respected.
Shit, look at Popeye. That taught tons of kids that girls should be helpless, boys should fight over girls, and girls should love the winner. Tom & Jerry, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester the Cat and Wile E. Coyote are all homicidal and mentally unstable and Peppy Le Pew is a serial rapist.
What the fuck are we thinking when we give this shit to our kids?
I'm going to bed.
All Hail Dr. Seuss. |
